31 July 2002
Winds picked up overnight with the yachts experiencing a steady 15 - 20 knots from the south east. Some of the yachts recorded distances of over 100 miles since the last position report. The two yachts in the racing division, Australian Maid and Shahtoosh, are neck and neck this morning with Shahtoosh one mile in front. The fleet had a good day, averaging about 50 miles since this morning's position report, however the winds are easing again and showers are reported. Shahtoosh and Australian Maid are still very close, with Shahtoosh just keeping ahead of her rival. Mango Tango has left Darwin and Coal Miners Dream is leaving tomorrow

Conditions have improved slightly with the fleet experiencing a 10 knot north easterly breeze. The lead yacht is Australian Maid 140 miles west of Darwin, with Shahtoosh 15 miles behind. The Cruising Division is also making slow progress in the light conditions with Blown Away Too 60 miles astern of Australian Maid.

27 July 2002

The race began today at 11:00 hours in 6-8 knots of breeze, with Australian Maid first to cross the start line followed by Seabird skippered by Richard Ham. The competitors who approached the start line from seaward side had difficulty making headway into a 3 knot outgoing current. Some of the fleet were 15 minutes late over the line. The light conditions persisted throughout the afternoon with the lead boats only 25 miles from the start at the 16:15 radio sched.
