The Rally Barbeque held at the Darwin Sailing Club at 6 pm July 16 was a huge party enjoyed by all 300 participants until very late. JR Duty Free donated three fragrances which were raffled off and raised $455 which was given to the Kupang Scholarship Fund. Thank you, JR Duty Free. |
Around 150 well-wishers were on the start boat, The Spirit of Darwin to farewell the yachts. Among the guests were the Honorable Rob Knight, Minister for Asian Relations and Trade representing the Northern Territory Government and the Acting Indonesian Consul in Darwin, Mr Muhamad Nazirwan Hafiz and Mr Arvianto Soeriaatmadja representing the Government of Indonesia. |
Three prizes were awarded, First over the Start Line was Sal Darago skippered by Jeremy Spencer, Best Dressed Crew Furthur skippered by Brian Calvert and Best Presented Yacht Invictus Reward skippered by John Ormston. Each of these yachts received a prize of a wet weather jacket. |
he yachts were accompanied to Kupang by the the Indonesia Fisheries Vessel Hui Macan 006 and into Saumlaki by Hui Macan Tutul 001. The Kupang yachts were led by Indonesia Yacht Akar Bahar, skippered by I. Iede, which arrived in Kupang at 5 pm on Monday night, setting the fastest time ever for the crossing under sail. |
We do not have detailed information about the situation in Saumlaki at this time because of technical problems in Saumlaki. except by phone that all yachts are in port and are enjoying the welcome and taking a well earned break. As information is received from Saumlaki, it will be mentioned on this page. |
Wednesday morning, 60 yachts had arrived in Kupang and the festivities are beginning. The national cell phone company Telkomsel were giving each participant a free SIM card for their hand phone with Rp 5000 of free calls. The rally headquarters are located at the beach side Pantai Laut Bar and Restaurant where they are offering cold beer, great service and FREE WIFI to all participants. |
Thursday, the slower yachts are making their way into Kupang and the shore celebrations are beginning to gain momentum, with tours available and two welcome functions scheduled with the Governors Welcome Dinner on Friday Night followed by a second dinner and cultural show on Saturday night, hosted by the Mayor of Kupang. |
Friday, the slower yachts leaving Darwin have now arrived in Kupang. The Gala Dinner hosted by the Governor of Timor was held in the grounds of the beach side Pantai Laut Bar and Restaurant. Participants were treated to a number of dances and cultural displays before dinner. After dinner the participants joined in with local dancers the continued to enjoy the party until very late. |
Saturday July 30 Mantra of Glasgow arrived in Kupang today and the skipper who had received a head injury after being stuck by the yacht's boom was checked by one of the doctors in the fleet and luckily has no serious injuries, other than looking like the losing contestant in a boxing match. The second Gala Dinner hosted by the Governor of Timor was again held in the grounds of the Pantai Laut and again our participants were treated to a second and more exciting program of dances and cultural displays. The Kupang Scholarship students came onto the stage and were introduced to the participants. This year is an important year for the Scholarship Program as the first three students have now graduated and will now move off into their chosen careers. They have been replaced by three new students who will begin their chosen course of study. For all information, please see our Scholarship Page which will be updated in the near future.
|
Sunday July 31 -Today is a more relaxed day with many of the participants complaining of being "partied out" and staying on their yachts, taking a break from the ongoing festivities. |
Monday August 1 - This morning, as everyone found out (at 4 am), is the start of Ramadan and this was announced by the hour long call to prayer from the mosque on the hill overlooking the anchorage. The yacht Cheetah II arrived at 9 am |
Tuesday August 2 and Ellida of Laira arrived at lunchtime and Kupang is now returning to normal as most of the yachts have now left Kupang and are heading for Kalabahi in Alor and the second group are now in Ba'a on Roti Island.
|
Wednesday August 3 - Only 3 yachts are still in Kupang and detailed information is not now available as the yachts are now traveling in small groups and to different destinations and are not keeping in touch with Sail Indonesia and they will not be together in one group until the scheduled program of events in Bali in September.
