Sail Indonesia 2012
2012 was a very busy year with three groups of yachts entering Indonesia at Kupang, Saumlaki and Talaud in the north to participate in Sail Morotai. This page mentions the Kupang group and those that went to Saumlaki are not mentioned in detail and for the yachts that went first to Talaud please see TBA
The rally barbeque was held at the Darwin Sailing Club at 6 pm on July 19 and was attended by over 330 crew members including representatives of the Government of the Northern Territory and the Indonesian Consul to Darwin Mr Ade Padmo Sarwono, his staff and other guests. Members of the Cruising Yacht Association of the Northern Territory worked hard to prepare dinner for almost 400 people.
JR Duty Free donated three bottles of fragrances which were raffled off on the night. The raffle proceeds amounting to $370 were donated to the Kupang Scholarship program, this amount of money pays the university fees for one student for one and a half years.
The manager of JR Duty Free Darwin Ms Carrie Wills drew the raffle and presented the prizes to the happy winners pictured below.

July 27, the Australian Customs setup a one stop office at the Darwin Sailing Club training room from 9 am until 3 pm where over 100 yachts and 340 crew members were processed and cleared ready for their departure the following day at 11 am.
July 28 at 11am the starting gun was fired by the Director General of Indonesian Fisheries, Mr Syahrin Adburrahman and almost 100 yachts crossed the line headed for Kupang. As as happens every year some yachts were delayed getting away by last minute problems or late crew arrival and planned to to leave a few days later.

July 29 Both crossings from Darwin to Kupang and Darwin to Saumlaki were made in 15 - 20 knot southeast winds and were uneventful without any yachts experiencing problems, two Indonesian Fisheries Patrol Vessels Hui Macan Tutul (Kupang) and Hui Macan II (Saumlaki) sailed in company with the two fleets to operate as radio relay vessels and were ready to provide any assistance if needed.
Yachts began to arrive in Kupang in the evening of Monday July 30. On the Tuesday morning Indonesian Customs, Immigration, Quarantine and Port Control (CIQP) set up a one stop office at the anchorage in a large room where all incoming formalities and immigration procedures for each yacht were completed in under 30 minutes, This was greatly appreciated by the participants as this avoided a six hour long procedure where each skipper would need to hire a car and guide then go to each office in turn and some offices are in the main port area at Tenau 15 kilometers from the anchorage at Teddys Bar. The Saumlaki yachts were also processed at a waterfront venue and assisted by Ministry of Fisheries staff.
Tuesday 31
Beginning at dawn yachts began to arrive in Kupang in a steady stream and CIQP worked steadily through the day to process the never ending stream of yachts and by 5 pm around 50 yachts had crews had been processed and cleared. There were some minor problems when the Customs boat engine was broken for a few hours and the smaller Q flags were difficult to see from the office in the open anchorage, some yachts waited longer than expected but overall the clearing process went smoothly.
In Kupang at 7 pm the Governor of Timor hosted a Gala Cultural Show and Dinner for all participants, it was a little early as only half of the fleet had arrived in Kupang but when one experienced hand was asked why replied "This is Indonesia" The party continued into the night with the crews enjoying the local Bintang beer.
Wednesday 1
The main group of yachts continued to arrive during the day as CIQP methodically worked through the incoming yachts and their crews. The participants that had arrived during the previous day arranged tours to local places of interest as well as to the inland areas. Some groups went to some local schools and some to the Emmanuel orphanage where a spontaneous collection on the spot raised RP 5,000,000 or around $500 AUD.
The national phone company TELKOMSEL arranges a service desk at the anchorage and every participant who asked was given a free SIM card and connection to the TELKOMSEL mobile phone network .
At 7 pm a second Dinner and Cultural Show for all participants was hosted by the new Mayor of Kupang Mr Joseph Salean - the usual speeches and prize giving was followed by the introduction of all the University Sudents from the Kupang Scholarship Program and Miss Yolvina Bimusu spoke in English to welcome all participants and to thank them all for their generous support of the scholarship program. During the presentation of the students Peter Wilcox, skipper of the yacht Mojo walked through the participants and a total of $300 AUD was donated towards the scholarship program. The Mayor and his official party left for other engagements - the party then took on an informal air with many participants singing on stage with the local singers while others trying to master the locacal dance steps and routines. The night was then left to the party animals who made merry long into the night.

Thursday 2
There was a slow start to the day as people surfaced from the previous evenings festivities and CIQP began the process of clearing in the slower yachts that had arrived during the night - some yachts had mechanical and electrical problems and the ever reliable Matthew and his crew made repairs with the minimum delay except for one yacht that needed a fuel injection pump which had to be flown in from Singapore. At the end of the day the one stop office arranged by CIQP was shut shut down and any yachts that arrived after this then had to wait at the anchorage until the CIQP staff arrived back from their usual offices.

Friday 3
Yachts began to leave Kupang for Alor and other destinations and life in Kupang began to return to the normal quieter pace. The officials and local government of Kupang once again gave a wonderful and unforgettable welcome to the yachts and their crews, with many of the participants saying the their visit to Kupang was one of the most memorable destinations

August 30
At this time the 2012 fleet of yachts are spread out across Indonesia with some still relaxing in Kupang and some already arriving in Lombok and Bali - so it is difficult to maintain contact with them at this time. Unlike other rallies there is no set schedule for all yachts with many yachts choosing to make their own way across Indonesia.
October 20
Many yachts were in Belitung for the final party while others had made there own way across Indonesia and on the Singapore and Malaysia. All events for 2013 have finished and at this time preparations are alrea being made for 2013.
